when, where and why did kitty-yo get started?

raik hoelzel started kitty-yo in 1994 in berlin. initially it released three 7-inch singles from the bands surrogat, wuhling and kerosin. although these bands were not really getting much attention from other labels raik was determined to champion the people and music he believed in. this approach to the industry has stood the test of time and kitty-yo’s releases are now both critically and commercially acclaimed. in 2007 kitty-yo decided to go digital and release its music via various online websites such as bleep, beatport, itunes, emusic, finetunes amongst others. the future for us is digital. | read some german interview with our promo department. | take a look at our visual history here

what’s the name ‘kitty-yo’ all about?

the name was taken from the lyrics from the ‘girls against boys’ track ‘tail light’. it’s all about this girl in the background thinking, considering and questioning things and this seemed a good concept for the label. sing along… ‘jackie-yo, kitty-yo, kitty-yo kittae some people like to party all night but i ain’t no funky dog, jackie your tale light is on’.
