laub is the german duo of vocalist antye greie and guitarist jotka. they have been with kitty-yo right from the early beginning, releasing various beautiful records. in short, laub’s music has always been about the play of shiny surfaces and this album may be viewed as but a more mature version on this basic model. their latest release ‘deinetwegen’ was released on antye greie’s own label agf produktion. now the group latches on to the blues, but it’s signature is incorporated into the duo’s own musical ethic of bleeps and post-techno rhythms, and quite apart from interpreting it in a meaningful or otherwise new manner, they show that it is but a spectral object disincarnated from all narrative. no desire, no writhing ghosts which whirl up from the depths of the unconscious – no more so than in past full-lengths, at any rate – but a work of inflections, nuances, liquidity and flux.

5 years past and laub still frontin. even both members founded families and developed into serious adulthood, when its about to show the world of music what a german post techno band can do, they lead the future! the blues came overnight, after another long day spent on computers, forums, world wide web… it came in form of john lee hooker and muddy waters, clear, simple, reduced, honest… and suddenly all this seemed to be missing in the sound they were witnessing and trying to translate into music. so it became an option to learn through that and develop an own interpretation of white german 21st century blues. in terms of licensing please contact nicky from team kitty-yo.

laub – filesharing
call it future pop or digital pop. despite having a “non-traditional” band and their untypical way of
singer/songwriting, laub’s ‘filesharing’ is by no means a ‘clicks and cuts’ piece. it is about pop music. compared to other artists who invoke the ‘future’ to refresh conventional song structures by producers or musicians by simply incorporating a modern futuristic sound, laub genuinely innovate with technique and involve jotka’s dialogue with innovative digital production concepts and their impact (on sound). sound and skills developed as a consequence, a mixture of pop, experimental electronics, processing, vocal treatment. laptops and file transfer protocol. antye is ‘texting’ in her own unique way that uses everyday language and lyrical content. simple words form self created words. her ‘emotional research’ on language based on ‘old-school’ imagery such as gears or train stations progresses to more technical one. an example of her text: ‘to result in onward development in code or is evolution a cycle mode’. furthermore, she employs romantic devices such as ‘we are riding the moped through lavender’ amongst ice cold broken beats and ambient backdrops. one must say, her fusion of poetry and pop is very charming indeed.

laub – unter anderen bedingungen als liebe
unter anderen bedingungen… is a very intriguing record, packed with gurgling electronica featuring noisy, arrhythmic percussion and samples of mysterious origin. floating over the top are the vocals of antye greies, an excellent singer with an obvious affinity for the yearning vocalisms of björk. howver, it’s anything but derivative.
