Like instrumental indie rock but tired of self-indulgent, wank-off solos and rambling 10-minute jams? Then check out Profane, the latest album by Couch. |

Profane is textured and propulsive: an ordered universe of ideas presented in a structured, comfortable format that could either be the soundtrack for your next movie... the love of music and easy melody, and the belief that the creation of rock and roll can be a truly inventive and simultaneously gratifying act for the artist and the listener alike. |

While Couch stands out as the rock band in a bunch of bands that don't really try to rock, Profane makes some attempts to remove the rock, blurring the line between them and a band like Kreidler. It's these moments where the sound Couch creates kind of gets behind you and pushes you in the ass, making you move forward along with them, that make them a very good band. The momentum they create can be amazing. (fakejazz.com) |

Profane: A Grand CD! (arthur.davis@adelaide.on.net) aus agd
Couch have done a marvellous job here. At 8 tracks and under 40 minutes, some might say that "Profane" is just an extended EP. It is so much more than that, though. Couch's brilliant and unique sound, just like so much in music these days, cannot be explained under just one term, or even a few. You could say that Couch are post-rock, but that would be hopeless, like calling Portishead "trip-hop", or calling Rechenzentrum "techno". Their music is the sound of summer. Stuff for road trips. They use guitars and keyboards to make sounds that could easily just be samples, and while they make instrumental music, their "tracks" are completely song-like, lyrical and evocative, capturing moods and moments like to rococo rot do, except with different music. All the songs on Profane are extremely alike, especially 12 sind nur 4 and Meine Marke, but this is where Profane works so well, because each song is a subtle variation. Couch has worked this subtlety out so well that when the slow, dreamy Meine Marke gives way to the driving clash of Kurzer Punkt, it doesn't seem that strange. Subtlety is a big thing for Couch. Their songs are repetitive, which will undoubtedly turn some off, but there is so much imagery happening in the music that it should not just be relegated to "background music". Couch's sound is grand, emotive and even a bit over-the-top melodramatic, in a thoroughly modern way which has wide appeal. Hip-hop influences weave themselves wonderfully into Plan, Alle auf Pause, Was alles haelt and Farbe, and make Profane even more intriguing and lovely. These are beautiful sounds: music about beautiful, lovely things. While Alle auf Pause should be a radio classic, my 2 picks are "12 sind nur 4" and "Farbe". For some rock-based similarity, check out the Aussies, The Government, who share Comrade Records with Couch (I'm Aussie too: had to say that). |
