This is Rechenzentrum, a trio formed at the documenta´97 consisting of Marc Weiser (music & composition), Lillevaen (video) and Christian Conrad (music & sound design).
Rechenzentrums selftitled debut album documents the search for new processes of music/moving image production, while refining forms of presentation which create on-stage dialogue between audio and video which manifests in technoid clusters and clicks'n'cuts structures. At the outset, Rechenzentrum decided and defined the project as a "band" in which audio and video are equally important, they use video as an instrument and treat music visually, animations and movies on cd releases are integral components of the finished work, not bonuses or enhancements.
Conceptual influences were various artistic directions, lettrisme, dada... also burroughs´ cut-up techniques, punk and others. The common threads in these directions are on the one hand: the search for what lies beneath the surface of the music or the moving image (the samples from film and music were choosen for their potentiality, not their hookline).
On the other hand, Rechenzentrum are interested in taking communication of music and entertainment to other levels, questioning the role of artist, the role of public personality. Their release material in numerous formats, testing the possibilities and limitations of each, thus the output is fragmentary, often involving cooperations with artists based in other media/genres. |

rechenzentrum: a computer world (arthur.davis@student.adelaide.edu.au) aus agd
Rechenzentrum are one of the most amazing electronic acts around these days. They cannot be stuck under the "club music" label, because their music is completely artistic. At the same time, though, they have retained a total club sensibility, which is exactly why they're so excellent. Rechenzentrum ("computer centre") are - along with to rococo rot, laub and a few others - the inheritors of the mantle of Kraftwerk, and their sounds are the logical conclusion of the vision that Kraftwerk had. They, like Kraftwerk, make sounds about a computer world, although, unlike Kraftwerk, they make them from WITHIN that computer world. "Rechenzentrum" is a big album, packed full of variety, but permeated with the rz duo's quite unique ticking, information-processing industrial rhythm throughout. Sure, lots of "techno acts" can be described like that, but rechenzentrum's method is so minimal, clean-cut and precise that it is first and foremost art. Rechenzentrum can be danced to, but their sounds are also infused with a strange, vivid emotion - which is at the same time unsurprising, because we all share this computer world - which also means that we cannot describe rechenzentrum as "dance music".
The album begins with "absent minded", which is at once both underground and pop. This, and the closing track, "samurai", are somehow removed from the continuity of the rest of the album, simply because of their diversity: samurai almost has Chemical Brothers sensibilities, and while it shows off rechenzentrum's insane talent, it doesn't quite fit. As a whole, though, I like to describe the album as music for walking through collosal, monolithic, glass-domed arboretums strewn across countless sci-fi worlds. The relentless ticking rhythms, while cold and calculating, are evocative and familiar. My favourite is "bildschirmschoner" ("computer screen-cover"), a weirdly joyful 8-min. track that builds and builds, then stalls on a pumping bass note, then moves off again with harldy a change, but always grabbing you, pulling you along with the computer world... It is so tremendously restrained that it maintains interest with only a handful of sounds. "King ant" works similarly.
By and large, a great album - even the more conventionally "techno" track, "camera silens / SFB 115" fits in well in the middle - and such is rechenzentrum's greatness that its flaws can easily be forgiven. Soundtrack music of the finest quality. A must-hear for all electronic music followers. (Btw antye, I also think absent minded is great!) |
